One of the first things to do is to actually make a list of box contents for your move. Keep a sheet of paper or notebook handy while you're packing boxes and containers so you can make a list of what you're putting in each box, and more importantly, where you're putting the box once it's finished. A good way to create this list is by numbering your boxes, instead of simply marking them with the name of the room they're from such as ?kitchen? or ?bedroom?. Then, on your box list, write down the number of the box along with a semi-detailed description of what's in it. For example, instead of writing down that box #2 has dishes in it, write down that it contains coffee mugs and plates ? that way, you'll know exactly what box to open when you're looking for a specific item.

Another thing that you should make has to do with things you must accomplish before and after you've moved into your new home. Take the time to write down informational numbers such as those for your local utilities and services, and go through your checklist carefully so you can be sure your new home will have all of the electricity, telephone and other necessities activated before you actually live there. A similar checklist should be made for the home you're moving from; so you can be sure to cancel all of the services that were in place at your former residence. There are many businesses out there which rent furniture by the month. You need a couch? Rent one for only $40 per month. Need a lamp? You can get one for $12 a month. Now,
let's see, in one year you would have paid $480 to use the couch and you wouldn't own it. The lamp would have cost you $144 and it's the same situation ~ at the end of your lease, you still own nothing.

Most of us would think it foolish to rent furniture. But, that isn't always the case. There are situations where renting may be the best option. Consider these scenarios:

� Your company transfers you to a new location but the rest of your family is staying in your present home until the school year ends and that's 4 months away. You buy a house and live in it until your family arrives. Do you go out and buy new furniture or do you rent a few necessities in the meantime?

� Right after you get married, you move into a new home. You and your spouse haven't decided how you
want to decorate your home. Do you rush your decisions or do you rent furniture until you find the style that will please you both?

� You graduate from college and accept a position in an unfamiliar city. You find an apartment that has everything you want, except furniture. You can't afford to go out and purchase the items you'll need right away. What do you do?

If you find yourself in any of these situations, renting all or part of your furniture may be a viable option. The thing you have to keep in mind is that it's never a long-term solution. From the figures in the first paragraph, you can see how expensive renting is over the long haul.

However, when you find yourself without furniture, short term rental may be your best option. If you don't have the cash or credit to purchase what you need, or if you only plan to be without furniture for a little while, short-term rental may be the best solution.

Most furniture rental companies offer several options from which to choose. Most of them also offer packages in
different price ranges, depending on the style and quality of the furniture you require.

� The bedroom package usually includes a double or queen-size bed, night stand and lamp, and 1 chest.


� A living room package provides a couch, end table and lamp, cocktail table, and a chair.


� A dining room package includes a table and 4 chairs.


� A complete home package includes all of the above.


� You can also rent any accessories you may need, including cookware and china, rugs, additional lamps, TV's, stereos, etc.


As long as you rent only what you need and do so for as short a time as possible, furniture rental may be the solution you need. But, don't forget to calculate the cost of your rent or mortgage along with the cost of your furniture rental before you decide which package to choose.

If money is an issue, one question you need to ask yourself is this: do you really need the most expensive package or can you get by with the more generic and economical choice for 2 or 3 or 4 months? Unless you plan to do a lot of business entertaining, the answer is obvious.

In short, furniture rental can be an economically sound solution to your problem, if you use your common sense and don't get in over your head. It beats sleeping on the floor any day!

Plan Your Move 4 to 5 Weeks Prior to Your Move

As your move date is getting closer there are more issues that require your attention. In this phase, 4-5 weeks prior to your move date, you will start zeroing in on your move needs and start making the following arrangements:

Packing

If you choose to pack yourself, this is the time to make sure that all packing supplies are ready. Don't forget to make arrangements with all service providers in the new location as well. Provide all service providers with your arrival date and try to set activation and deactivation dates accordingly.

Get Familiar

Check with the DMV as for issuing a new driver's license or I.D. card, and ask about car registration requirements.

Make sure to ask your mechanic to perform a thorough check up of the engine, tires, breaks, lights, etc. it is also recommended to look for a new mechanic in your destination city beforehand and have the vehicle checked again upon completion of the trip to assure that the long trip didn't damage it

As another step towards your trip, prepare your car registration and insurance. For those who are moving out of state it is important to check and confirm the insurance coverage with your insurance agent. Make sure that you know what are the limitations in the policy once you leave the state and if you can pay to get this coverage anywhere. This is especially important in regards to towing services.

As for registration: learn the registration requirements in your destination state and take care of all these requirements as soon as you arrive at your destination

Planning Your Move 2 Weeks Prior to Your Move 1

While for some people this phase is really exciting and they start counting the days left until the big day, for others the last two weeks are the most stressful. This when you start to really look forward for the move date, and for the experience to be behind you. Have no worries, you are going to make it. Your move day will eventually arrive. However, there are still things to do. There are few more tasks that you must complete within the next 2 weeks in order to assure a smooth and relaxed experience on the day of the move.

Make It Easy for Your Movers

The main purpose of this task is to allow your mover an easy access to your home and prevent additional charges such as long carry fees and stairs fees. This will also assure a smoother and safer move.
Reserve an Elevator
This factor is relevant mostly to those who live in a high-rise building. Reserve the elevator for your move date to allow the movers to use it instead of the stairs. That will prevent stairs fees
Arrange for Parking
Arrange for parking for the moving truck. If you live in a narrow street or if parking permits are required, complete these arrangements beforehand. These arrangements will prevent long carry fee, an additional charge that applies in case the distance from your residence to truck exceeds given limit (usually 150 feet).
Children

Depending on your children's age they may be a great help on the big day but they may also be a distraction if too young. Here are your options:

Babies and Infants:

Babies and infants are likely to distract you on the day of the move. Try to make arrangements for them to be out of the house, with relatives or friends. If you cannot arrange for them to be out of the house, arrange for them to be with a babysitter.

Children 5 years and older

Plan Your Move 3 Weeks Prior to Your Move

Less than a month till your move date, you must be excited by now. In 3 weeks you will relocate. You are planning for this for the last 3-5 weeks and it is up and coming. If you followed the previous guides, by now you must be on track to a smooth move. However, if there are any unfinished tasks from previous phases, complete them as soon as possible.

Dispose of Combustibles and Flammables

According to federal laws and regulations, your moving company is not allowed to transport dangerous flammable items and liquids such as: matches, fireworks, acids, aerosol cans, chemistry sets, poisons, cleaning fluids, and, ammunition. Be sure to drain any fuel from your lawn mower and other machinery that you plan to transport. Also, do not take used cans of oil, thinner, or any other substances that may be flammable including propane tanks.

Moving with Pets

If you are moving with your pets, this is the time to make transportation arrangements for them. Take your pets to your veterinarian to ensure proper up to date health certificates and rabies inoculations. Some states will require these documents.

Leaving a Rental Apartment or House?

If you are moving out of a rental house or apartment and you didn't do so by now, this must be the latest for you to give notice to your landlord. Do that right away to avoid late-payments

Confirm Your Details with Your Mover

3 weeks prior to your move is when you have to confirm all the following details with your moving company. Most moving companies are booked 3-4 weeks ahead. Here is the list of what you must finalize with your mover:

Inventory
Let your mover know of any changes in your inventory list. Any changes in your inventory list will affect the price. Be sure to mention any oversized items such as a piano.

Date
Notify your mover if there is a change in the date you booked. If there is a date change complete this task immediately to reserve you new date.

Packing and Unpacking

Consider that: it is a lot easier to clean your home before it is full with your items. Take the time to review your floor plan in order to plan your item placements. Keep in mind that the better you know where things suppose to go, the faster you will be able to get the unload process done. It is finally here, the day you have been planning for in the last two month has finally arrived and you are moving out. Moving Out

It is recommended to stay home until the last item is loaded onto the truck. Make one last walkthrough in your house and perform the final inspection before the moving team leaves. Confirm sure that every single item was loaded and that nothing is left behind. Make sure your phone is connected throughout the day. Pack your phone in one of your suitcases only after the movers left. If you instructed your utilities providers to disconnect your utilities today, verify that they followed your instructions and that all utilities have been disconnected. Before you leave the house, clean it and remove all debris that is left behind. While doing so, take another look and inspect every room to make sure that you did not forget anything. Be sure to inspect everywhere including the attic, garage, etc. Meet the new owner of your home or real estate agent for a final walk through the property and provide the new owner or real estate agent with the keys.

Divorce is hard, there's no question about it. Not only has your marriage ended but, most likely, your lifestyle is undergoing some drastic changes also. This is especially true if you are forced to leave the place that was home to you and your family.

Depending on your particular situation, you may find that moving into an apartment is your only option. Many times it's hard to think of an apartment as home after you've been accustomed to living in a house surrounded by family. But, if you choose your apartment wisely, you may find it'll become a cozy, comfortable haven.

Take some time to select your apartment.

Remember, this is going to be your new home. Don't rush the selection process. Decide how much you can afford to spend for rent and look at as many apartments in that range as you can. Location should be one of your prime considerations. Your life is complicated enough right now, don't make it worse by choosing an inconvenient location where commuting becomes a problem.

If your children will be visiting regularly be sure your apartment is large enough to let them feel at home. If possible, select an apartment with a room just for them. Let them have a hand in decorating it so they'll feel a part of it.

When moving to another state, some of the things you should do thorough research on school systems, salary, housing and the like. Pay attention to the tax structure in the state you are relocating to - how much is the income tax? Do they have a sales tax? What is the property tax rate? All these things can have a major impact on your budget and should be carefully considered before relocating.

Once you have decided that your relocation is a good move for your family, you'll need to plan the details of getting from here to there. Do you have a house to sell? Then you need to consider whether you will sell it "by owner" or use a real estate professional. In order to sell your house fast and get the best price, you might want to look at it with an unbiased eye to see what improvements should be made. Remember that curb appeal is very important as is the impression the potential buyer gets when he first walks in and the look of the kitchen and bathrooms.

Of course, you will need to find suitable housing in the new state. You should plan a couple of trips out to look for new houses with realtors. If you are not sure whether the move will be permanent, consider renting a house for the first year. That way if you don't want to stay it will be easier to pick up and leave.

Moving to Chicago Checklist

There are a lot of things you’ll need to keep track of when planning your move to Chicago. Here’s a quick checklist to help you along.

As soon as possible:

- Start saving boxes. These boxes can be found behind restaurants, in your office or at liquor stores. Or you can just buy them.
- Begin packing.
- Reserve a moving truck or obtain a moving company. If you rent a truck, check on insurance.

Two weeks before:

- Keep packing a little each night. A box a day can make a great difference.
- Obtain a copy of your medical records.
- Complete a change of address with the post office.
- Have a garage sale or donate any items that you are not going to move.
- Have your vehicle maintained (change the oil, rotate the tires…)

One week before:

- Reserve the elevator. (If applicable)

Organize Your Move With A Moving Checklist

Moving is a chaotic and stressful time. There’s so many things to arrange, having utilities switched, signing up the kids for a new school, scheduling the movers, packing the house. With all the other things you do it’s not easy to find the time to get everything done!

Using a checklist of tasks, can help keep you organized and make sure you don’t leave out an important moving task. I suggest that you start the list well in advance – a month or more before the move. Just jot a few things down and then leave the list on the kitchen counter or fridge where everyone can see it. As you think of new things to add, write them down right away or it might be too late when you think of them again!

As the time for the move grows closer, you may want to transfer the list to a calendar format. Some of the items like notifying the phone company, will be things you can do in advance so you can assign those a date and then each day check the calendar to see what tasks need to be done. Cross off those that you have accomplished and you can easily see what is left to do. This method also works well if you are delegating some of the items on the list – you can add the name of the person responsible next to the task and this will avoid any last minute “but I though you were going to do that….” problems.

When the day of the move comes, you’ll probably still have plenty left on your to do list so make sure that it’s the last thing you pack up on your way out and the first thing you unpack at your new home. Once you have weighed your options and decide to go with moving your own items, take a few minutes to read the many articles about how to do self moving at http://Moving-Tips.net. What Moving Truck Size

To get an accurate measure of how much truck space you’ll need. It typically takes 200 cubit feet of loading space per room. If you go to upack.com it will give you a nice estimator chart of how big a moving truck rental you’ll need. Here is an estimate of what they require. A 10 foot truck will equal 368 cubic rental truck space. A 20 foot truck will be 669 cubic feet and so on. Even though their estimators are quite accurate, you may use more or less cubic feet. Again getting estimates from several companies is the way to ensure you get the best deal possible.

Here is a sample of U-Haul’s truck sizes: 26' will move 4+ bedrooms; 24' will move 3-4 bedrooms; 17' will move 2-3 bedrooms; 4' will move 1-2 bedrooms; 10' will move an apartment.

Moving trucks will vary according to size and if you go one way or plan on returning your rented vehicle. You’ll need to see how many miles per gallon the rental will get. You may go to AAA and find out from the fuel calculator what the cost will be. Make sure you get insurance. You may even be covered through your regular auto insurance, so be sure to give them a call. Some of these budget truck rental companies throw in a dolly, furniture covers and even some give you a limited amount of boxes. But check, you don’t want to get charged for anything you didn’t ask for.
Timing Your Move

You may need to reserve a truck way in advance of your move. The peak season normally begins towards the end of May and runs until September. Call well in advance if you move during these months.

Loading Your Moving Truck

Place the largest and heaviest items first. Stove, washing machines, refrigerator, dishwasher, freezers, anything that will take several people to load. Be sure to place objects on both sides of the truck, try to keep it as balanced as possible. Bolt these items against the sides of the wall of the truck. Cover items with furniture pads. With your wood furniture be sure to place bubble wrap around them and then the furniture pads, it will help prevent ruining the surface.

Now load your longer items, mattresses, long mirrors (which you will want to put bubble wrap and maybe put inside a mirror box), headboards, sofas and table tops (if they are removable). Put them along the side of the truck. Be sure when you put your bed frames in the truck to dissemble them and place all loose pieces in a sealed bag and tape to the frame. Pool sticks, skis and poles can be rolled up in your rugs and then taped down. Remember to tape on the outside of the rug so it does not get ruined. Then comes the largest and biggest boxes. You may place them on top of your covered appliances as well. The lighter boxes can be placed on top of the heavier boxes. Place the fragile items last making sure they are secure and will not move during your move.
